Good to Know: Cause and symptoms of Vulval Itching

Causes and Symptoms of Vulval Itching

The vulva is remarkable in the way it maintains a healthy balance of flora. When this balance is upset, uncomfortable itching and other symptoms can arise.

Note: In most cases, itching is not a cause for concern. However, if it is severe, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms, please see a healthcare professional.

What Causes Vulvar Itching?

Causes can be broken down into several categories. Vulval itching should not be ignored as it can occasionally indicate more serious concerns.

  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
  • Menopause
  • Irritants
  • Lichens
  • Vaginal candidiasis (yeast infection)
  • VIN – Pre cancer condition

Lichens

Lichen sclerosus causes white spots, predominantly in women over fifty. Characteristics include patches that are:

  • Itchy and White
  • Smooth or crinkled
  • Bleed or hurt when scratched

Treatment: Topical steroids or immune-system medication.

Vaginal Candidiasis (Yeast Infection)

Affecting over 70% of women, this occurs when Candida fungus grows out of balance. Symptoms include:

  • Sore, itchy, and red vulva
  • Burning during urination or sex
  • Thick, white "cottage cheese" discharge

Vulval Pre-cancer (VIN)

A significant proportion of itching could be related to Pre-cancer and cancer. Lesions may only be identifiable by a doctor with a special interest in vulval disease.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

An inflammation caused by a change in flora. Key indicators include:

  • Grey-white thin, watery discharge
  • A distinct fishy odour
  • Itching or burning sensation

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

Includes Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Genital warts, and Trichomoniasis. Important: See a professional urgently to avoid complications.

Menopause

Natural changes usually starting around age 50. Symptoms affecting the vulva include vaginal dryness and urinary problems.

Irritants & Contact Dermatitis

Caused by scented products, soaps, latex, or friction from tight clothing. Usually resolves once the irritant is removed.
